A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A particular user, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436,000 from a initial bet of $32,537.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Platform data shows that participants estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.
Yet the odds had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in betting activity just before the social media post was made.
"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.
A small number of other individuals also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Politicians are starting to take note.
Proposed legislation introduced on the start of the week would prevent government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.
Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.
The industry were examined under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.
A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
