Stephen Ireland started turning out for the team in pre-season this season through close friend and current team teammate Blake Norton, and the ex- Irish midfielder then invited additional former professionals, who all compete in a midweek nine-a-side match, to join in.

Ex- Senegalese forward Oumar Niasse, who netted twelve scores in 65 top-flight games for Everton and even now attends their home games, also made his first appearance against the opposition - who are based in the city and wear an Everton training kit as their uniform.

"A friend Stephen Ireland said 'come and play, it's enjoyable'," commented the striker.

"After that he told me we were playing a side from the city and the surprise I had when I saw them wearing Everton shirts - I thought this is strange for me!

"When you still enjoy football and you know you can still do it, wherever you can kick a ball, what are you going to do?

"Those people who turn up and watch are pleased and to make someone's moment if they watch us playing there and to pose us queries - it's more like the pleasure of us having a place we can play, with structure of course."

Such is the squad depth at the club, he had his first game at full-back.

"It's a bit different but then, I enjoy running and just move inside - I'm not staying back that much," he said.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not staying' and that I'm just going to keep running.

"That running is what I'm after. It's enjoyable."

Along with the forward's six goals on debut, Ireland has scored eight in three games for Wythenshawe, while George Boyd scored 5 on his debut match and Lescott, a centre-half by position, scored a hat-trick in one match up front.

The team are leading of the Premier Tier with three wins from three and a GD of +19.

One opponent, 38, who features on the wing for the opposition, came up against former Latics full-back Maynor Figueroa on the weekend - and had to tell his nine-year-old boy who Emile Heskey was.

"It was spreading like wildfire they had these former top-flight players," said the player.

"I think I was a bit awestruck playing against Figueroa to be honest.

"Also Heskey came on and he's got 60-odd English appearances.

"We held our own for a solid twenty minutes but then we had a man sent off and it was tough.

"We literally have not stopped talking about it - I was calling my mum and sibling on the way home.

"The opponents were all friendly, shaking our hands after the game - it was like playing a bunch of regular fellas.

"Now we are eager for the second fixture."
