New research suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
