"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the band?" an inquiry reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're not alone. Several celebrated admirers have also petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals frequently show them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The album came out of a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound toughness required a new sound – more organic and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the band will consistently be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
